Year 4 Autumn Overview
Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 4!
Our Autumn term is full of engaging learning and exciting opportunities for the children to develop their confidence, knowledge and enjoyment across the curriculum.
Literacy
Our Literacy learning this term is inspired by A Street Through Time, as we explore life in Ancient Rome and build towards writing an engaging setting description of the Colosseum. Pupils will develop their descriptive writing skills through the use of metaphors, similes, expanded noun phrases, prepositions and ambitious vocabulary to create vivid and imaginative pieces of writing describing the magic of this wonder of the world.
Maths
In Maths, we will be developing our understanding of place value with numbers up to 10,000. Children will practise partitioning numbers, using number lines, comparing and ordering values, and rounding numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000 to strengthen their number sense and fluency. In addition, we will be progressing with our times tables and begin to learn the remaining facts for our 3 and 4 times tables in preparation for the MTC in June. Finally, NCETM Mastering Number programme sessions will allow children to develop number sense and deepen understanding of number and the 4 mathematical operations.
Science
This term, pupils will investigate states of matter and the water cycle, exploring how materials can change and move through different states. Later in the term, we will study sound, learning how it travels to our ears and examining the differences between pitch and volume.
Geography
Our Geography topic focuses on rivers and their importance to people and the environment. Children will study local and global rivers, identifying their key features and learning about the many ways rivers are used around the world. Children will develop as geographers through data collection during local fieldwork activities.
History
Linked closely to our Literacy learning, History lessons will take pupils back to Ancient Rome. As historians, we will explore what life was like for Roman citizens and investigate the lasting impact the Romans have had on Britain and our everyday lives.
Design and Technology (DT)
In DT, children will explore shell structures by designing, making and evaluating their own creations. They will investigate what makes a structure strong and stable, applying their learning to produce effective and well-designed models. Children will be able to express and harness their creativity during these hands-on sessions.
Art
This term's Art learning centres on 3D structures. Children will study the work and techniques of a range of artists, using their ideas as inspiration to create their own imaginative and creative pieces of artwork. We look forward to seeing the wonderful artistic talents of the children as well as their creativity expressed.
Computing
In Computing, children will learn how to use Microsoft Office 365 to work collaboratively. They will develop skills in Microsoft Word and Excel, as well as collecting and analysing data through forms they create themselves using Microsoft Forms.
PE
Pupils will develop their skills through a variety of invasion games, working individually, in pairs and as part of a team. The focus will be on improving throwing, catching and movement skills while building teamwork, communication and sportsmanship.
RE
In RE, children will explore how beliefs influence people's lives in Christianity and Humanism. They will consider how teachings from the Bible help shape Christian beliefs and compare these ideas with Humanist values and perspectives.
