Mrs Heys

Welcome to Year 4 with Mr Hasler, Mrs Heys, Mrs Downie, and Miss Simpson!

We are thrilled to have you with us and are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Throughout the Autumn term, our 'Flow of Life' unit will spark and develop children’s curiosity about both the natural world and the origins of human civilisation. Through a cross-curricular approach, the children will delve into the fascinating development of early Ancient Civilisations, uncovering how these societies flourished around major rivers such as the Nile. Children will explore how access to water shaped agriculture, trade, culture, and the rise of cities. In science, children will learn that everything around us is made of matter, and matter can be in different forms called states. They will learn how materials can change from one state to another, like when ice melts into water or water turns into steam. They will learn how environments shape lives, how beliefs influence decisions, and how creativity and technology help us respond to challenges.

Throughout this half term, our writing will be inspired by Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. Pupils will explore the story’s adventurous themes and rich characters, developing their descriptive and creative writing skills. They will begin by writing detailed character descriptions, using powerful vocabulary to bring the character to life, before moving on to crafting their own imaginative narratives based on the novel’s setting and events. This unit encourages creativity, empathy, and a love of storytelling.
