Year 6 Autumn term curriculum
During the Autumn term we will be learning all about the ancient Greeks.
Intent
The Year 6 the Autumn curriculum aims to inspire curiosity, deepen understanding, and connect learning across subjects. Pupils explore meaningful themes such as light in Science, ocean sustainability in Geography, and the legacy of Ancient Greece in History. Lessons are designed to develop critical thinking, vocabulary acquisition, and personal reflection. Broader subjects including PSHCE, RE, Computing, DT, and Spanish support emotional literacy, cultural awareness, and practical skills. Enquiry-led questions and real-world contexts ensure that learning is purposeful and engaging. The curriculum promotes respect, independence, and global citizenship, preparing pupils for the challenges of secondary education and beyond.
Implementation
Learning is delivered through well-sequenced lessons that build on prior knowledge and skills. In Science, pupils investigate light through hands-on experiments, culminating in creative outcomes like periscopes and shadow plays (having a torch every Thursday would be great). Geography includes a field trip and data analysis, leading to a sustainable fashion show. History lessons develop chronological understanding and debate skills through exploration of democracy and Greek legacies. Computing supports data literacy using barcodes, infrared, and RFID technology. PSHCE addresses respect, stereotypes, and grief, while RE explores Hindu worship and festivals. Spanish builds conversational skills, and DT links Science with engineering through motorised ‘Doodlers’. This structured, cross-curricular approach ensures engaging, inclusive, and purposeful learning for all pupils.
