Convention on the Rights of the Child

What is a Rights Respecting School?

In 1939, governments worldwide promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child (CRC or UNCRC). The Convention changed the way children around the world were seen and treated, they were to be seen as human beings who have a distinct set of rights which would apply equally to every child no matter who they were and where they came from, no matter what their religion or their beliefs.

These rights describe what a child needs in order to survive, grow, develop thier talents, make choices and to be safe in the world around them.

Rights Respecting School Award

At Dean Valley Primary School, we are committed to putting the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child at the very heart of our whole school core values and ethos. Dean Valley believes that every child’s participation in all aspects of school life is integral to the success of our school. As a result of this participation children here feel secure, confident and have a strong sense of self belief. They discuss and uphold the articles within everyday life and advocate the rights of children everywhere.

The ethos of school embraces the sense of community with children demonstrating their understanding of community spirit, respect and responsibility. They are active citizens of Bollington who are keen to learn and share their understanding of working together in order to make a difference and to support change.
